A useful fit for

A documented 18V LXT tool-only hammer driver-drill for a buyer who needs its 1/2-in chuck and hammer mode and can supply an approved battery and charger separately.

The main tradeoff

Battery and charger are not included; the exact tool-head dimension and bare-tool weight are unknown, hook inclusion is unclear across maker documents, and a 2021 release conflicts with the current page/manual on some model specifications.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

What is included with the XPH15ZB?

The exact page labels XPH15ZB tool-only and says battery and charger are not included. The maker documents disagree or are incomplete about the hook: the manual calls it optional, the parts breakdown marks it standard equipment, and the exact page does not itemize it. Confirm the actual retail box rather than assuming the XPH15RB kit contents transfer.

Does the XPH15ZB document hammer-drilling mode on Makita LXT?

Yes. The exact XPH15ZB product page identifies an 18V LXT hammer driver-drill; its linked XPH15 manual documents hammer drilling alongside rotation-only drilling and clutch screwdriving. The mode does not establish suitability for every masonry task; match the bit and material to the manual.

Will a 1/2-in bit shank fit the XPH15ZB chuck?

Makita's exact page lists a 1/2-in keyless chuck, and the parts breakdown names a 13-mm chuck. This meets the finder’s inclusive 0.5-in bit-shank threshold, but is not a 1/2-in hole rating.

Is XPH15ZB documented to meet the 6-in-or-less tool-head filter?

No. Makita states 6-1/2 in overall length on the current page/manual, but neither source states tool-head length. The matcher leaves the head field unknown; an overall dimension cannot be substituted for the hard tool-head requirement.

The Makita XPH15ZB is an 18V LXT sub-compact brushless hammer driver-drill sold as a tool-only configuration. Its exact U.S. product page says the battery and charger are not included. The 2027 Makita reference catalogue independently lists the XPH15ZB in its LXT drill section as a 1/2-in hammer driver-drill; the exact current page and linked XPH15 manual supply the fuller operating evidence. This is not the similarly suffixed XFD15ZB: the XFD15ZB is an ordinary driver-drill without documented hammer action.

Three modes and a compact drill/driver layout

The XPH15 manual describes rotation-only drilling, hammer drilling and screwdriving through an adjustable clutch. A mechanical two-speed transmission provides no-load ranges of 0–500 rpm and 0–1,700 rpm; the corresponding stated hammer rates are 0–7,500 and 0–25,500 blows per minute. The manual gives 20 clutch settings. Makita's 350 in-lb maximum-torque figure and speed ratings are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements or a promise that every bit and workpiece can be used at those limits.

The product page specifies a 1/2-in keyless chuck. That is a bit-shank capacity, not a guarantee of a 1/2-in hole in any material. The current page and XPH15 manual list 1/2-in steel and masonry capacity. The manual further separates wood-bit types: 1-7/16 in for an auger bit, 1-3/8 in for a self-feed bit and 2 in for a hole saw; it separately lists screw-driving limits. Match the mode, bit, material, workpiece and exact task to the manual rather than using a torque headline or chuck opening as a universal hole-size rating.

Hammer action is a useful added mode for appropriate masonry drilling, but the manual calls for a tungsten-carbide-tipped bit, says not to force the tool and warns about sudden twisting force when a bit breaks through, binds, clogs or meets reinforcement. It is still a chuck-based hammer drill/driver, not an SDS rotary hammer or a chipping tool. Secure the work and follow the manual's holding and safety directions; the listed capacities do not approve every masonry job.

Tool-only package and LXT checks

The exact XPH15ZB page calls the package “Tool only” and explicitly excludes the battery and charger. The linked manual lists compatible battery cartridges BL1815N, BL1820B, BL1830, BL1830B, BL1840B, BL1850B and BL1860B, and charger families DC18RC, DC18RD, DC18RE, DC18SD, DC18SE, DC18SF and DC18SH. It warns that listed equipment may not be available in every region and says to use only the named battery and charger models. An 18V label by itself is not a compatibility check.

The sibling Makita XPH15RB page is marked discontinued and identifies a different kit package: two BL1820B 2.0Ah batteries, a DC18RC charger and a tool bag around the XPH15ZB drill. Those items are not part of the exact XPH15ZB tool-only package. The XPH15ZB page's inclusion line does not itemize every accessory. The parts breakdown marks a hook and screw as standard equipment, while the instruction manual describes the hook as an optional accessory; the official product picture also shows a hook attached. Since those records do not make the exact retail accessory contents unambiguous, check the seller's exact package rather than treating the photograph or the discontinued kit contents as a box list.

Length, weight and a source discrepancy

Makita's current XPH15ZB page and linked manual state 6-1/2 in overall length; the English XPH15 flyer gives the same overall-length figure. A 2021 press-release specification table assigns XPH15ZB a 7-in overall length, 3-in wood capacity and 5/8-in masonry capacity instead. The current exact page, linked manual and flyer agree on 6-1/2 in and on the lower material figures, so those are the figures used here, but the release's different XPH15ZB row remains a documented source conflict rather than a measurement I can resolve. In any case, overall length is not the questionnaire's tool-head length. Neither the product page nor manual states a tool-head measurement, so the XPH15ZB cannot be treated as a documented six-inch-or-less head just because the overall dimension is 6-1/2 in or the tool is called sub-compact.

The product page lists 3.1 lb with a battery. The manual's stated 3.1–3.7 lb range varies with the battery cartridge and attachments. Neither source supplies a bare-tool weight, so do not compare these figures as if they were tool-only weights. The package itself does not include a battery.

Source-based verdict

The evidence-based case for XPH15ZB is narrow but clear: an 18V LXT tool-only package, brushless motor, 1/2-in chuck, two speed ranges, clutch screwdriving and a documented hammer-drilling mode in a short overall package. The buyer must already have or separately source an exact manual-listed battery and charger; the accessory list is not completely clear; the 6-1/2-in figure is overall length, not head length; and a 2021 release table conflicts with the linked manual and current exact page on several ZB specifications. Use the current product page and manual together, verify the retail suffix and package contents, and apply the exact manual's material and safety limits. This assessment is based on Makita documentation; it does not claim ownership, hands-on use, testing, measured performance, price, stock or customer experience.
