A useful fit for

A compact tool-only 18V LXT driver-drill for a buyer who already has a manual-listed compatible battery and charger and needs a documented half-inch bit-shank chuck for ordinary drilling or clutch-controlled fastening.

The main tradeoff

This exact ZB package excludes battery and charger. Its maker-stated 2.9-lb weight is with a battery, not a bare-tool measurement; the page's 5-7/8 in is overall length, not a tool-head limit, and there is no hammer mode.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does the XFD15ZB include a battery or charger?

No. Makita labels this exact SKU tool-only and explicitly excludes the battery and charger. Buy only if you already have or will separately obtain the manual-listed equipment; the product image does not determine box contents.

Is the XFD15ZB for Makita 18V LXT batteries?

Yes. Its product page identifies the 18V LXT family. The manual names permitted battery and charger models and cautions that regional availability can vary; verify the exact pack and charger labels rather than relying on voltage alone.

Does the XFD15ZB meet a 1/2-in chuck requirement?

Yes. The exact manufacturer page lists a 1/2-in keyless chuck. Chuck capacity concerns bit-shank fit, not the size of a hole the drill can make in any given material; use the manual's type-specific limits.

The XFD15ZB is Makita's black-finish, tool-only configuration of the XFD15 18V LXT sub-compact brushless driver-drill. The exact product page labels it tool only and explicitly says that battery and charger are not included. Its package should not be confused with the separate XFD15SY1B kit, which adds a 1.5Ah battery, DC18SD charger and tool bag. Makita also uses XFD15ZB as the base drill inside that kit, but the two suffixes describe separate purchases and have different box contents.

What the tool is designed to do

The maker describes a 1/2-in keyless chuck, two-speed mechanical transmission, brushless motor, dual work lights and 350 in-lb maximum torque. The current product page and XFD15 manual report 0–500 rpm in low and 0–1,700 rpm in high. A 2021 Makita press release gives 0–550 rpm at the low end for the XFD15 family. The two current primary sources agree with each other, but the reason for the historical difference is not stated. Use the current page and manual as the applicable documentation without presenting either number as an independently measured result.

The XFD15 is a driver-drill, not a hammer drill. The manual describes rotation-only drilling and clutch-controlled fastening; it contains no hammer-drilling mode. A buyer who needs a documented hammer mechanism for masonry should choose a different model category rather than assume that a masonry bit provides that function. The manual's application table also separates drilling capacities by substrate and bit. It lists 1/2-in steel, and for wood it distinguishes a 1-7/16-in auger bit, 1-3/8-in self-feed bit and 2-in hole saw. Those exact tool/bit pairings are more useful than treating the 1/2-in chuck as a universal drilling limit. Chuck size is about the bit shank the jaws can hold; it does not promise a 1/2-in hole in every material.

The tool-only trade-off is a package decision

For someone already equipped with a compatible LXT battery and charger, the ZB configuration avoids buying a second kit's power equipment. For a buyer without them, the purchase is incomplete as a working cordless setup: the page excludes both items. Confirm the exact pack and charger models in the XFD15 manual before relying on existing batteries. The manual lists BL1815N, BL1820B, BL1830/BL1830B, BL1840B, BL1850B and BL1860B battery cartridges, along with DC18RC, DC18RD, DC18RE, DC18SD, DC18SE, DC18SF and DC18SH chargers; it cautions that regional availability can vary and directs users to use only listed equipment. A familiar LXT label is not a substitute for reading the model line on a pack and charger.

Makita's 5-7/8-in figure is overall length. It is not identified as head length, and the strict short-head filter does not infer one from it. The product page's 2.9-lb figure is explicitly with a battery even though the ZB box omits one; the manual gives a 2.9–3.5-lb range based on battery and accessories. A bare-tool weight is not supplied. In a cramped installation, consider the body, bit length, battery protrusion, hand position and safe approach angle together; neither the "sub-compact" label nor overall length proves operating clearance.

Accessory claims and setup limits

The exact ZB page's written Includes statement is "Tool only" and notes the battery and charger exclusion. Its product photograph shows the drill with a hook attached, but the XFD15 manual labels the hook an optional accessory and describes securing it with a screw. The image alone is not evidence that the hook ships with every tool-only package, so do not count it as a confirmed included extra. The manual also requires removing the battery before adjustments or accessory changes and warns users to start long bits at low speed with the bit in contact, stay within the bit's speed rating and keep force in line with the bit. Those instructions matter more than a torque figure when choosing bits or planning a task.

Assessment

The reason to choose the XFD15ZB is a compact ordinary drill/driver with a documented half-inch chuck, if the buyer already owns the exact approved power equipment or intends to source it separately. The disadvantages are not hidden: battery and charger are absent, the machine has no hammer mode, the displayed weight is not bare-tool weight, and the overall dimension does not establish short-head clearance. Use the material-specific manual limits and confirm the seller's exact model suffix before deciding. This assessment is based on Makita documentation only; it does not claim personal use, ownership, testing, measured performance, price or current stock.
