A useful fit for

A tool-only 18V LXT right-angle drill for users who need a keyed 1/2-in bit interface and can supply a manual-approved battery and charger.

The main tradeoff

The 17-1/8-in overall-length figure does not establish head clearance; the drill has no documented hammer mode or clutch, and capacity depends on bit and gear.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

What comes with the XAD05Z package?

Makita labels this exact SKU tool-only and lists a chuck key and key holder; the battery and charger are not included.

Can the XAD05Z accept a 1/2-in bit shank?

Its exact page and manual identify a keyed 1/2-in chuck. That opening describes bit-shank fit, not a universal 1/2-in hole capacity.

Is its head six inches long or less?

No exact head-length figure is stated. The listed 17-1/8-in measurement is overall tool length and cannot answer a head-clearance requirement.

Makita's XAD05Z is an 18V LXT brushless right-angle drill sold without a battery or charger. Its exact U.S. page identifies a keyed 1/2-in chuck and lists the chuck key and key holder. That makes the XAD05Z a different choice from the hex-holder XAD06Z: the interface is the first decision, not a small suffix detail. The analysis here is based on Makita's product page, flyer and shared XAD05/XAD06 manual, not on hands-on use or comparative testing.

The keyed chuck accepts a different bit family

The XAD05 chuck is keyed and opens to a nominal 1/2 in. Its manual instructs the user to seat the bit, tighten the chuck by hand, then tighten evenly through all three chuck-key positions. If a job calls for round-shank bits, this familiar chuck format can be useful; the matching key and holder are listed accessories. It is not interchangeable with XAD06's 7/16-in hex sleeve. A 1/2-in chuck capacity describes the maximum bit shank, not a promise that this tool can bore a 1/2-in hole in every material.

For material limits, Makita's manual separates bit type and gear. It gives steel capacity as 1/2 in, and for wood lists a 1-1/2-in auger in either gear, a 2-in self-feed bit in high gear or 2-9/16 in in low, and a 4-in hole saw in high or 5 in in low. These are manufacturer limits for named operations; they do not mean every bit, workpiece or hole at that diameter is suitable. The low-speed mode is the choice for the larger listed wood attachments, not a way to override the manual or the tool's response under load.

Right-angle form helps access, but is not a short-head measurement

The drill turns the drive through a fixed right-angle head, which can help in framing, cabinets or other work where a straight drill-body orientation is awkward. The official page gives 17-1/8 in overall length. That is the complete tool length, not the size of the drill head, nor the working clearance required for a bit, battery, hand and approach angle. No exact head-length figure is published. A person who must clear a particular obstruction should compare the full silhouette and test the intended reach using the maker's safe setup rather than treat “right angle” as proof of fit.

Makita lists a two-speed variable transmission at 0–450 and 0–1,400 rpm, soft start, an electric brake and a built-in light. Those are maker-listed features, not measurements from this review. The manual says to let the tool stop before changing gear or direction; if speed drops sharply in high gear, stop and select low rather than keep forcing the load. It also warns that the tool develops substantial torque. Brace it securely with the intended grip, restrain the workpiece, keep hands clear and account for reaction if the bit binds or breaks through.

Tool-only means power equipment is a separate check

The exact XAD05Z page says the battery and charger are not included. The linked manual lists compatible LXT battery cartridges including BL1815N, BL1820B, BL1830/BL1830B, BL1840B, BL1850B and BL1860B, and lists several DC18-series chargers; it warns to use listed packs and chargers and only genuine Makita batteries. Check the manual's exact approved equipment and identify what is already in your battery system before treating the bare tool as a complete package. The separate discontinued XAD05T kit is not a shorthand for what is inside this Z package.

The published 7.6-lb weight is with a battery; the manual gives a 6.8–7.5-lb range depending on battery and attachments. Neither should be read as the bare-tool weight. The manual's overall length is also stated with a BL1860B pack, and no head dimension is given. A standard side handle should not be assumed from an image; the current exact page's written accessory list names the chuck key and key holder.

Who should shortlist it—and what remains uncertain

XAD05Z is a plausible shortlist entry when the user needs a cordless right-angle body, already has or will source an approved LXT pack and charger, and specifically needs a keyed chuck for compatible bits. Its main restrictions are meaningful: it is not hammer-capable, no clutch setting is documented, and it is not a 1/2-in hole guarantee. For a hex shank, compare XAD06Z; for an included-battery 1/2-in kit, the earlier XAD05T is a separately reviewed package that Makita now marks discontinued. Check the exact SKU, authorized battery/charger, bit dimensions and actual clearance before purchase. This is a documentary assessment; it makes no claim about present seller stock, price, condition, performance in the reader's material or personal use.
