A useful fit for

A current-reference tool-only X2 LXT angle drill for a buyer who needs a keyed 1/2-in shank opening and can supply the manual-approved two-pack power setup.

The main tradeoff

Battery and charger are separate; this X2 tool still uses two 18V packs, and its 21-1/4-in overall length does not establish head clearance or reduce the need to brace high-torque work.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

What is included with XAD03Z?

The exact page calls XAD03Z tool-only and excludes battery and charger. It lists the side handle, hex wrench, drill chuck and chuck key; do not transfer the PT kit bag or battery contents.

Explore this need in the finder →
Will the XAD03Z chuck accept a 1/2-in shank?

Yes. The XAD03Z is the keyed-chuck member of this angle-drill family and the manual specifies a keyed 1/2-in chuck. This describes bit fit, not material capacity.

Which battery platform and packs does the XAD03Z use?

Makita describes the XAD03 as an 18V X2 tool that runs from two 18V LXT packs. The XAD03 manual lists approved BL1815N, BL1820B, BL1830, BL1830B, BL1840B, BL1850B and BL1860B cartridges; this Z package includes none.

The Makita XAD03Z is the tool-only member of Makita’s XAD03 36V (18V X2) LXT right-angle drill family. It retains the family’s keyed 1/2-in chuck, two-speed drilling arrangement and high-torque handling requirements, but the exact Z package excludes both batteries and charger. This assessment follows the exact U.S. product page, XAD03 instruction manual and linked family flyer; it is not based on use or comparative testing.

Tool-only still means two 18V packs for X2 operation

The XAD03Z page explicitly says battery and charger are not included. It lists the side handle, hex wrench, drill chuck and chuck key as included pieces; the two BL1850B batteries, DC18RD charger and bag belong to the separate PT kit and should not be carried over to this Z suffix. A buyer assembling an operating setup must check the XAD03 manual’s approved battery-cartridge list and the exact charger instructions rather than assume that any pack bearing the LXT name is suitable.

The XAD03 is a 36V arrangement formed from two 18V LXT packs. That distinction matters if the owner’s present kit has only one battery, if the packs are different ages, or if the buyer is comparing an 18V single-pack angle drill. The tool-only label does not make the complete operating setup lighter or less demanding: the manual’s weight range of 12.6–14.0 lb varies with batteries and attachments, while Makita’s page reports 14 lb with batteries. Neither figure is a bare-tool weight.

Keyed chuck, bit limits and low-speed protection

Makita specifies a keyed 1/2-in chuck for the XAD03. That is a useful choice when the intended bit has a compatible round or hex shank; it is not the same interface as the 7/16-in hex sleeve on the XAD04 and XAD06. A 1/2-in chuck opening is not a material-capacity claim. The XAD03 manual gives a 1/2-in steel limit and separate wood guidance: a 2-in auger in high or low, self-feed bits up to 2-9/16 in in high or 4-5/8 in in low, and hole saws up to 4-1/8 in in high or 6-1/4 in in low.

High speed runs up to 1,400 rpm and low speed up to 350 rpm. The maker’s page describes automatic speed change under changing load; the manual specifies a torque limiter that acts at low speed and disengages the output shaft when its threshold is reached. It does not make binding harmless. Makita instructs users to fit the auxiliary side grip securely, hold and brace the tool, secure the workpiece and take particular care with large bits and breakthrough. The angle-drill body can deliver a reaction that a light one-hand grip will not control.

Plan the work envelope, not just the approach angle

A right-angle chuck can change how a bit approaches a joist or other restricted area, but no exact XAD03 tool-head length is supplied. The 21-1/4-in overall figure is not the head dimension; the manual also gives 24 in with the front handle extended. Before committing to a confined-space task, compare the complete drill, bit, two battery packs, grip position and approach clearance against the real opening. The “six inches or less” finder choice therefore cannot confirm this model from the available length figures.

The published package weight and overall length are substantial enough to deserve a support plan. This is a paper-based fit assessment, not a claim that a particular worker can reach, hold or control the tool in a specific position. Read the manual’s instructions for the selected bit, material, gear, hand placement and battery before using it.

How it differs from nearby XAD choices

The XAD03Z and XAD03PT share the keyed XAD03 drill, but the PT is the kit with two named 5.0Ah packs, charger and bag. The keyed 1/2-in chuck also separates the XAD03 from the XAD04’s 7/16-in hex sleeve. The XAD05 keeps a keyed 1/2-in interface in a different 18V arrangement, while the XAD06 is a 7/16-in hex option. Compare the exact power system and bit shank before considering package convenience: a tool-only price, if encountered elsewhere, would not include the missing power equipment by default.

The XAD03Z is a defensible candidate when the XAD03’s documented keyed chuck and X2 LXT operating plan match the job and the owner already has the listed power equipment. It is a poor assumption when one battery, a different shank, unspecified head clearance or unverified package contents are essential. Check the suffix, accessory list, approved battery and charger, bit-specific capacity and actual work envelope; the manufacturer documents these facts, not a guaranteed hole count or a hands-on fit result.
