Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
What power equipment is listed with XAD03PT?
Makita lists two BL1850B 5.0Ah 18V LXT packs and a DC18RD dual-port charger with this exact kit, along with a bag, side handle, hex wrench and chuck key. Confirm the delivered suffix and written box list.
Explore this need in the finder →Does XAD03PT accept a 1/2-in bit shank?
Yes. The XAD03 manual specifies a keyed 1/2-in chuck. That is the shank interface; it is not a general promise to drill a 1/2-in hole in every material.
Explore this need in the finder →Can its listed overall length prove it fits a six-inch drill head clearance?
No. Makita gives 21-1/4 in overall and 24 in with its front handle extended, but does not provide the exact tool-head length used by the finder. Check the full body, bit, battery, hands and approach clearance.
Explore this need in the finder →The Makita XAD03PT is the battery-and-charger kit built around the 36V (18V X2) LXT XAD03 right-angle drill. Its exact U.S. product page identifies a keyed 1/2-in chuck and two 18V packs, so this is neither the single-pack XAD05 nor the 7/16-in hex XAD04/XAD06. The assessment below is based on Makita’s product page, XAD03 manual and XAD03PT flyer—not on using or testing the tool.
The PT suffix is a documented two-pack kit
Makita’s XAD03PT page and its model-specific flyer list two BL1850B 5.0Ah batteries and a DC18RD dual-port charger. The package lists also name a bag, side handle, hex wrench and chuck key. The Z sibling is the tool-only version, so do not use its missing power equipment—or any other XAD-family kit—to infer the PT box. If considering an older or partial package, match the exact suffix and inspect the written inventory, battery labels and charger model before treating it as complete.
The tool draws on two 18V LXT packs to operate as a 36V X2 machine. The manual lists approved battery-cartridge models, while the package evidence identifies the two included BL1850B packs and DC18RD charger. Makita also publishes a run-count claim of up to 160 2-9/16-in holes per charge in 2x SPF using two 5.0Ah packs and a separately sold self-feed bit. That is a manufacturer statement with named conditions, not an independent test or a prediction for different wood, bits, pack age or operator technique.
Keyed 1/2-in chuck: useful interface, not a hole rating
The XAD03’s keyed 1/2-in chuck is the first practical dividing line. It accommodates suitable bit shanks through that nominal opening; it does not promise that a 1/2-in hole is suitable in every material. The manual instead gives separate limits by material, bit and gear. For steel it specifies up to 1/2 in. For wood it lists a 2-in auger in either gear, a self-feed bit up to 2-9/16 in in high or 4-5/8 in in low, and a hole saw up to 4-1/8 in in high or 6-1/4 in in low. Use the exact accessory and speed row, not the chuck number, to judge a planned operation.
The two speed ranges are 0–1,400 rpm high and 0–350 rpm low. Makita describes automatic speed change under load, and the manual says the torque limiter operates at the low-speed setting and disengages the output when its threshold is reached. These controls do not eliminate reaction force. For large self-feed bits, the manual calls for a securely installed side grip and firm bracing, including attention to the direction the tool may twist if a bit binds or breaks through. The manual also cautions against excessive pressure and requires workpieces to be secured.
Right-angle form does not mean a short head
The angled chuck can be relevant where a straight drill body would obstruct the approach, but Makita does not publish the exact tool-head length used by the finder’s six-inch limit. The stated 21-1/4-in overall length—and 24 in with the front handle extended—cannot answer that clearance question. Check the entire tool, installed bit, paired batteries, hand position and approach path at the actual work location. A photograph or overall-length figure is not a substitute for that geometry.
Makita gives 14 lb with batteries; the XAD03 manual shows a 12.6–14.0 lb range that depends on attachments, including the battery cartridge. Those are with-battery specifications, not the bare tool’s weight. The paired-pack design and published mass make it important to consider how the tool will be supported and braced, rather than reading “right angle” as “small” or “light.”
Who should compare it—and what to verify
The XAD03PT belongs on a shortlist when the job calls for a right-angle drill, the intended bits fit its keyed 1/2-in chuck, and a two-pack LXT kit is appropriate. If the intended bit has a 7/16-in hex shank, compare the XAD04 or XAD06 interface instead; if an 18V single-pack right-angle tool is the priority, the XAD05 is a different arrangement. These are configuration differences, not performance rankings.
Before choosing, verify the PT suffix, both battery models, charger, accessories, available room and exact bit/material/gear instructions. The product page, manual and flyer establish a useful paper specification, but they do not establish a retailer’s current stock, package condition, price, actual clearance or real-world hole count.
