Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Does the FD10R1 package include a battery?
The exact FD10R1 page lists two BL1021B 2.0Ah batteries, a DC10WD charger and a tool case. Follow the linked manual for approved cartridges and bits.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the FD10R1 support hammer drilling?
No hammer-drilling mode is documented in the linked FD09/FD10 manual. The tool is described for rotation drilling and screwdriving, so it does not satisfy an essential hammer-mode requirement.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the FD10R1 accept a 1/2-in bit shank?
The FD10Z uses a 1/4-in hex interface. The sources do not establish a conventional adjustable chuck capacity, so it cannot satisfy an essential 1/2-in chuck condition.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the FD10R1 meet the 6-in tool-head condition?
Makita gives 5-7/8 in overall length but no tool-head length; the overall figure does not demonstrate a 6-in head measurement.
Explore this need in the finder →Makita's FD10R1 is the 12V max CXT package for the FD10Z compact hex-interface driver-drill. The U.S. page calls it a 1/4-in hex screwdriver kit and lists two BL1021B 2.0Ah batteries, a DC10WD charger and a tool case. The New Tool Flyer instead calls the machine a “hex driver-drill,” while the linked FD09/FD10 manual uses the family name “Cordless Driver Drill.” The shared documentation supports drilling and screwdriving functions, but this is not a standard three-jaw chuck drill. Check that your bits and adapters are among the types the manual permits before choosing it for drilling work.
The hex interface changes the fit question
FD10's front end accepts 1/4-in hex driver bits and supported socket bits, as described by the product literature and instructions. It should not be represented as a 1/2-in keyless chuck or a generic chuck opening. For the finder, maximum conventional chuck capacity is therefore unverified and left blank; a quick-change hex shank is a separate interface. The manual's accessory diagrams and cautions matter more than matching the nominal 1/4-in shank to an unrelated chuck-size label.
The two-speed motor is listed at 0–450 rpm and 0–1,700 rpm, with a maximum-torque claim of 250 in-lb. Makita publishes separate drilling capacities of 3/8 in in steel and 13/16 in in wood, and lists its screw-driving functions and clutch controls in the family manual. Those manufacturer specifications are not independent test measurements and do not guarantee that a chosen bit, fastener or workpiece is safe or suitable. The manual's approved accessory limits and setup guidance should govern. No hammer-drilling mode is documented, so the hex holder does not make this a masonry hammer drill.
As with a conventional drill/driver, clutch positions help limit screw-driving torque but do not predict the right setting for every material. Follow the instructions, begin with a suitable setting and test on matching material. Keep the workpiece secure, maintain control at breakthrough and stop if the bit binds or the tool reacts unexpectedly. These precautions are operating guidance, not a claim that this review tested the tool.
What the FD10R1 box includes
The exact page identifies the drill within the kit as FD10Z and specifies two 2.0Ah BL1021B packs, a DC10WD charger and a tool case. The FD09/FD10 manual lists BL1016, BL1021B and BL1041B battery cartridges, with DC10SB, DC10WD and DC18RE chargers, as applicable models. Follow that exact compatibility list; the included kit pair is not proof that every CXT pack or charging arrangement is suitable. The 2.0Ah capacity is package information, not a runtime estimate. Makita lists 2.1 lb with battery; the manual's battery-dependent weight range reaches 2.4 lb. No bare-tool weight is provided.
One useful point of comparison is FD09R1. That separate kit has a 3/8-in keyless chuck around FD09Z and otherwise has a similar two-speed, 250 in-lb-rated CXT drill/driver package with two BL1021B packs, DC10WD and case. FD10R1 instead uses the shorter hex-drive arrangement around FD10Z. The shared family manual does not erase that interface difference. A conventional round-shank drill bit that fits a keyless chuck is not automatically a directly supported FD10 accessory; consult the manual for supported hex and socket bits.
Compact overall size is not a head-length answer
The FD10 is 5-7/8 in long overall according to Makita. The short-head question in this finder is about a tool-head length, which is a different dimension; the sources do not provide that head measurement. I do not convert the overall-length figure into a head-length pass. Nor does the figure predict clearance once a bit, hand and workpiece approach are included. The manual's listed 2.1–2.4 lb includes a battery and varies by cartridge; it is not a bare-tool comparison.
FD10R1 is worth comparing when your work uses compatible 1/4-in hex accessories and you want the exact two-battery kit, charger and case. Its limits are equally specific: no documented hammer action, no conventional chuck capacity, no stated tool-head length, and no bare-tool weight. If a task depends on a particular bit shank, hole diameter, battery or confined-space clearance, resolve that from the actual accessory and instructions instead of inferring it from the “compact” description or from a related CXT drill package.
