A useful fit for

A DEWALT 20V MAX owner seeking a 1/2-in brushless drill/driver and intentionally buying the bare tool.

The main tradeoff

No battery, charger or bag is listed; DCD800 has no documented hammer-drilling mode and the 6.37-in figure is tool-head length only.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

What comes in the DCD800B package?

DEWALT lists the DCD800 drill/driver and belt hook. The page says the battery and charger are sold separately, and does not list a bag.

Can I choose the hammer mode from the DCD800/DCD805 manual?

No. The mode table lists drilling and screwdriving for DCD800; hammer drilling is specifically listed for DCD805.

Does 6.37 inches describe the complete clearance needed?

No. DEWALT calls it tool-head length. The chuck, bit, battery, hand and approach angle still affect whether the whole setup fits.

Research-based assessment · exact DEWALT US package page and DCD800/DCD805 Type 1 manual checked 28 October 2026

The DCD800B is DEWALT’s 20V MAX XR brushless 1/2-in drill/driver in a tool-only package. This review reads the exact B-suffix listing alongside the linked instructions and the four DCD800 kit listings. No sample was purchased or used, and this is not a hands-on test or independent measurement.

The B package is a deliberate bare-tool choice

The DCD800B page lists a DCD800 drill/driver and belt hook, and says the battery and charger are sold separately. It does not list the kit bag. That makes the SKU most relevant to someone who already owns a compatible DEWALT 20V MAX pack and charger, or who has budgeted for them separately. DEWALT’s 20V MAX footnote describes 20 volts as the maximum initial voltage measured without a workload and 18 volts as nominal; it should not be read as a different battery family. Confirm the model markings on the actual pack and charger rather than assuming that another brand’s battery, an adapter or DEWALT 12V MAX equipment is interchangeable.

The B suffix does not denote a different drill motor from the DCD800 kit versions shown on DEWALT’s option list. The D2, D1E1, E2 and P1 SKUs add different battery, charger and bag combinations. The exact DCD800B page is the one to check if avoiding duplicate kit batteries matters. A retailer image showing a pack attached should not override the written package list.

Drilling and screwdriving, without hammer mode

DEWALT identifies a brushless drill/driver with a metal ratcheting chuck that opens to 1/2 in, a variable trigger and two speed ranges: 0–650 and 0–2,000 rpm. The manufacturer also specifies an adjustable three-position, three-mode LED with a spotlight setting and a 20-minute shutoff. These details support ordinary drilling and fastening use; they do not make the DCD800 a hammer drill. In the DCD800/DCD805 manual’s mode table, DCD800 has drilling and screwdriving settings 1–15, while hammer drilling is listed for DCD805. The shared manual is not permission to carry DCD805’s mode to DCD800.

The manual explains that the numbered collar controls screwdriving torque and that a higher setting corresponds to more torque. Start cautiously and use a suitable practice fastener or scrap when selecting a setting; the right position depends on the material and fastener. In drill mode the clutch does not engage. DEWALT warns that an overloaded drill can stall and twist suddenly, so secure the work and keep a controlled grip. Stop the tool before changing gears or direction, and remove the pack before changing accessories.

A half-inch chuck is not a universal hole rating

Chuck capacity describes bit-shank fit, not the maximum hole the drill should make in every material. DEWALT’s manual gives DCD800 maximum-recommended capacities of 1-1/2 in for wood auger and paddle bits, 1 in for wood twist bits, 2-9/16 in for self-feed bits, and 3 in for wood hole saws. Its metal entries are 1/2 in for twist bits and 1-1/2 in for hole saws. The DCD800 masonry row is blank; the manual’s masonry capacity belongs to the DCD805 hammer-drill column. These are manufacturer recommendations, not results we measured. Check the bit type, material, gear and exact instructions rather than reading a hole-size promise into the 1/2-in chuck label.

Compact dimensions have a narrow meaning

DEWALT calls the tool-head length 6.37 in and compares it with the DCD791. It is a tool-head figure, not a complete clearance envelope with chuck, bit, battery, hand or approach angle. The manufacturer does not give a tool-only weight in the exact page text reviewed here, so this assessment does not infer one. Measure the actual cavity and account for the accessory and hand position needed to keep the bit aligned.

The product page also advertises relative UWO and hole-count comparisons under named battery and test-material conditions. Those remain DEWALT claims; this review does not reproduce a drilling trial or turn them into an absolute output rating. The page does not provide a settled UWO number for this SKU.

Who should consider DCD800B?

This package is a plausible shortlist candidate for a DEWALT 20V MAX owner who wants a 1/2-in drill/driver and does not need a battery or charger in the box. It is a poor fit if an included power pack, charger and bag are essential, if a documented hammer-drilling mode is required, or if the work needs a specified masonry capacity. The included belt hook is a small convenience, not a substitute for a case or battery.

The captured DEWALT US safety-notice index did not list DCD800 on its 28 October 2026 snapshot; that absence is not a safety certification or a promise that later notices will not appear. Confirm the exact B suffix, the seller’s written box contents, the battery/charger compatibility and the current manual before choosing. Runtime, loaded drilling speed, tool balance, heat, noise and durability were not independently measured.
