Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
What is included with the Bosch PS31N?
Bosch lists one PS31 12V Max 3/8-in drill/driver and two bits. The exact page says the battery and charger are sold separately; it does not list a bag or case in the Includes line.
Explore this need in the finder →Which Bosch battery and charger family does PS31N use?
The linked July 2021 Bosch compatibility list names the PS31 family and lists BAT414, BAT415, BAT420, GBA12V30 and GBA12V60 batteries plus BC330, BC430, GAL12V-20, GAL12V-40 and GAX1218V-30 chargers. Because Bosch labels this list for reference and points to its site for current compatibility, check the current model-specific information and the labels on your equipment before pairing it. None is included with PS31N.
Explore this need in the finder →Does PS31N have hammer-drilling mode?
No hammer-drilling mode is documented on the exact PS31N page or in the linked PS31 manual, which describes drilling and screwdriving. Do not select it when integrated hammer mode is essential.
Explore this need in the finder →Can PS31N accept a 1/2-in shank bit?
No. Bosch identifies a 3/8-in keyless chuck (0.375 in), below the finder's inclusive 0.5-in shank-capacity condition. The manual's 3/4-in wood and 3/8-in mild-metal maximum capacities are different, material-specific measurements.
Explore this need in the finder →Does PS31N meet the finder's six-inch-or-less head condition?
No. Bosch states a 7-in tool-head length, one inch over the inclusive 6-in limit. That head measurement is not a full clearance envelope with a chuck, bit, battery, hand and approach angle.
Explore this need in the finder →The Bosch PS31N is a current U.S. bare-tool listing for the PS31 12V Max drill/driver. Its package line names the drill and two bits; Bosch says the battery and charger are sold separately. That makes the N suffix a different purchase from the PS31-2A kit, even though both pages point to the same PS31 drill family. This assessment uses Bosch's exact listing, linked instructions and compatibility material; it is not a hands-on test.
A compact conventional drill/driver
The PS31 uses a three-jaw, keyless 3/8-inch chuck. Bosch publishes two no-load ranges—0–350 and 0–1,300 rpm—and a 20+1 clutch description. In practice, those are useful choices to understand from the page: low gear is the slower setting for controlled screwdriving, while high gear is the faster drilling range. The trigger is variable-speed. Bosch also lists a built-in work light and claims up to 265 in-lb of torque. The speed and torque figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent results under load. The product page does not identify the motor as brushless, so that classification remains unknown here.
Separate chuck fit from the job's hole limit
The 3/8-inch chuck describes the largest bit shank the chuck is specified to accept; it is not a promise about hole diameter. Bosch's PS31 manual gives separate maximum-capacity figures: 3/4 inch in wood, 3/8 inch in mild metal and a 9/32-inch screw size. These are maker-stated limits for named materials, not a universal result for every bit, stock or work setup. The same instructions cover drilling and screwdriving, but no hammer-drilling mode or masonry capacity appears in the reviewed documentation. A 1/2-inch shank, essential hammer action or a masonry plan therefore calls for a different, explicitly documented arrangement.
The N package leaves the battery system to you
The exact PS31N page's Includes line lists one PS31 drill/driver and two bits. Its highlights state that the battery and charger are sold separately. Unlike a kit assessment, this package has no battery-count or charger-model uncertainty: neither is listed as included. No bag or case appears in the package list, so do not assume one is part of a seller's offer without checking the exact box and suffix. Bosch lists the HDC200 dust extraction/collection hood under compatible equipment; it is not one of the two included bits and should be treated as a separate accessory.
For a 12V Max owner, Bosch's linked battery/charger list gives useful model identifiers for the PS31 family. Its July 2021 sheet names BAT414, BAT415, BAT420, GBA12V30 and GBA12V60 batteries, and BC330, BC430, GAL12V-20, GAL12V-40 and GAX1218V-30 chargers. The sheet also directs users to Bosch for current compatibility. Check the present model-specific instructions and the labels on an existing pack and charger before relying on a match; a shared voltage label alone is not enough. If you do not own compatible equipment, compare the total system you need rather than judging this bare tool by itself. No current price, stock or bundle is assumed here.
Published dimensions are not jobsite clearance
Bosch states a 7-inch tool-head length and a 1.8-pound tool-only weight. The stated head is above this site's inclusive six-inch-or-less finder screen. It may still work in some restricted spaces, but the published number does not include a complete envelope for the chuck, installed bit, battery, hand position or approach angle. Likewise, the 1.8-pound number is a manufacturer figure for the tool without a battery; a compatible pack adds weight, and no independent weighing is available. Bosch's tight-space and overhead positioning is marketing context, not proof that this configuration fits a particular recess or will feel a certain way in use.
How it differs from nearby Bosch choices
The practical distinction between PS31N and PS31-2A is the exact package: the PS31N page lists the drill and two bits, with battery and charger separate; PS31-2A's separate page lists a kit with batteries, charger and bag. Do not carry the kit's box contents across to the N suffix. The PS11N is also a Bosch 12V Max bare-tool drill with a 3/8-inch chuck, but it is a right-angle design rather than the conventional pistol-grip PS31. Those package and geometry differences matter more than their shared platform label.
PS31N is a plausible candidate if you already have a Bosch 12V pack and charger that the current instructions approve, want a small ordinary drill/driver rather than a hammer drill, and do not require a 1/2-inch shank. The strongest reasons to pass are needing power equipment in the box, needing an explicitly documented short head, or requiring hammer mode. Before choosing, confirm the PS31N retail suffix, the exact battery and charger models, and the tool's clearance with the intended bit and grip. Bosch's reference listing establishes what it documents, not seller condition, availability, runtime, durability or tested drilling performance.
