Speed selection and clutch setup

Two speed settings and a numbered clutch are controls, not a promise that one setting suits every material or fastener. Start with the manufacturer's manual for the exact drill, accessory and task.

Use the gearbox as instructed

For the DCD794, DEWALT describes speed 1 as the higher-torque gear and speed 2 as the higher-speed gear. Its manual instructs the operator to let the tool stop completely before shifting. The page lists up to 1,650 rpm no-load maximum; the lower speed range was not confirmed in the source copy reviewed for this assessment. Do not invent that number from a similar model.

Use the clutch for screwdriving

The DCD794 manual lists screwdriving positions 1–15 and says higher numbered settings apply greater torque. Begin conservatively on scrap of the same material when appropriate, then adjust to avoid burying the head or stripping the work. That practical setup advice is not a performance rating; the tool, fastener, bit and material change the result. In drill mode, the manual says the clutch does not engage, and warns that overloading can stall the drill and cause a sudden twist.

Make adjustments with the tool safe

The manual instructs users to turn the tool off and remove the battery before adjustments or installing/removing accessories. Secure the workpiece, keep the bit aligned and follow the safety equipment directions for the task. A hammer-drilling mode also has specific hearing-protection guidance in the manual; use it only when the exact model has that mode and the work calls for it.

These notes describe instructions found in the DCD794/DCD799 North American manual; they do not replace the supplied instructions. For this exact DCD794B, the review distinguishes the model's verified operating modes and the limits of available evidence.
